In the long term, the use of statin drugs to control cholesterol led to a heart attack. Users often suffer from memory, liver toxicity, nausea and muscle cramps. Side effects of statins provide more risk than benefits.
It is a measure that you have not heard in the media but it is known in medical circles that NNT is that for many patients to treat. It refers to the number of patients who should be treated to prevent a bad outcome. Any TNN over 50 is considered as "worse than a lottery ticket." The H-virus pylori, the main cause of stomach ache has a NNT of 1.1.1. 10 of 11 people who take antibiotics are becoming free of the virus.
This is not the case with statin drugs. Most of them have NNTs between 250, 500 or more. Lipidor, for example, has a NNT of 100, which simply means that 100 persons must be treated to prevent one of suffering a heart attack. The other 99 receive no benefits!
Only the cholesterol is simply not as important as C-reactive protein and your levels of homocysteine are markers to better predict future heart attacks.
If you are fixated on your cholesterol and you want to do so safely, try natural products:
1- The fish oil and flaxseed: Fish oil and flaxseed are rich in omega-3 oils and improve blood circulation and prevents blood clotting. Consuming less than an ounce of fresh fish each day has been shown to reduce glucose intolerance. The fish oil helps to normalize the abnormal heart rhythms and reduce the risk of sudden cardiac arrest. You should take 2 to 8 grams of fish oil daily.
2- Folic acid: With B6 and B-12 help to reduce your level of homocysteine and cleans the arterial plaque. Homocysteine has been shown to damage artery walls, allowing cholesterol to stick to the walls of arteries. The recommended dose is 800 to 1200mcg (micro grams).
3- Magnesium: It relaxes artery walls, making them more flexible to blood flow is greatly improved. It helps reduce blood pressure. Most magnesium comes from seeds, nuts, legumes, tofu and green leafy vegetables. Magnesium is seriously lacking in our diet. Take between 300 to 600 mg.
4- Vitamin C and E to both prevent damage from free radicals which contribute to cardiovascular disease. Vitamin C helps maintain the elasticity and function of blood vessels and helps maintain good blood pressure. Vitamin E prevents free radical damage caused by LDL (bad cholesterol) and the damage vascular linings. Between 1000 and 5000mg of vitamin C and 400 to 800 IU of vitamin E are recommended doses.
5- CoQ10: If you take a statin, supplementing with CoQ10 is a must. Statins are known to steal your heart of this enzyme and that is what ultimately leads to obtain many heart attacks. It helps increase the efficiency of the heart muscle. It is a powerful antioxidant and has the ability to trigger beta-cell function in the pancreas that helps to produce more insulin, leading to better control sugar in diabetics. 100 to 400 mg per day is recommended.
6- Niacin: It is a B-3 vitamin that helps reduce fat in the blood and it has been shown to reduce cholesterol levels by 18%, triglycerides by 26% and raise the good cholesterol HDL to 30% when 1800 to 3000mg is used daily.
Statins are generally worthless. The natural alternatives are much better at controlling cholesterol levels without serious side effects that statins.

Nice blog...and there really are natural alternatives to statins....based in therapeutic nutrition that combines plant sterols, soluble fiber, good fats and the other nutrients discussed here. Lots of real science on this --- and even gets a NIH/FDA endorsement. The challenge of course is that many people find it easier to take a pill each day than to live the heart healthy lifestyle. Here at Kardea, we are about enabling this lifestyle. A leading product is a nutritional bar --7g fiber, 7g protein, 1g plant sterols, low saturated fats, low salt, lower glycemic sweetening approach...and the TASTE great Glad to send you samples.
